About Us

Irna and Sean Athans live in St. Pete Beach, Florida, where many live out their later years, and eventually face the inevitable end of life. Over the past several years, they’ve watched their parents and friends age, their bodies and minds gradually fading daily. More than a month ago, they witnessed the passing of Sean’s stepfather, Davy, which marked a poignant and challenging moment in their lives.
The journey toward the end of life is arduous, not just for those who are passing, but also for their families. At times, Irna, Sean, and Sean’s mother Zene found themselves lost for words, unsure of what to say, what to do, or how to support Davy best as he transitioned from this world. They learned that it is common for individuals nearing the end of their lives to express fear, often saying, “I am scared.” Through their experiences, Irna and Sean recognized that this fear of the unknown and of letting go is a universal part of the dying process. Hospice care workers, too, shared this insight, confirming that such fear is often present during this profound stage of life.
Determined to transform their pain into something meaningful, Irna and Sean hope that at least one of these poems will offer light to someone also facing loss. Their goal is to bring comfort, understanding, and a sense of peace to those navigating the complex and often silent journey of death and dying.
Irna and Sean first met at the MIT Sloan School of Management, where they earned their MBAs. Although their paths diverged after graduation, they reconnected more than fifteen years later, when both were navigating their midlife transitions. After rekindling their connection, they were married and found deep happiness together. They enjoy simple pleasures, such as walking on the beach, swimming, and traveling off the beaten path.
